A Practical Guide to Trade Policy AnalysisExperts from UNCTAD's Division on International Trade in Goods and Services and Commodities and the WTO's Economic Research and Statistics Division on Tuesday launched “A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis,” a joint publication developed to enhance developing countries' capacity to analyze and implement trade policy.

The idea began in 2005, when Vi Chief, Vlasta Macku, and WTO’s Chief Economist, Patrick Low, great believers in evidence-based policymaking, decided to create a tool to help researchers conduct policy-relevant research based on sound economic analysis.

One more German think tank member for the Vi

altThe German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), one of the leading think tanks for issues related to development policy worldwide, has become the ninth think tank member of the Virtual Institute.

Since its establishment in 1964, the institute has worked to build bridges between theory and practice, using a combination of research, consulting and training, as well as collaboration with international research networks.

Vi trade policy analysis workshop strengthens academic teaching and research in developing countries

altThe UNCTAD-WTO-ITC workshop on trade policy analysis organized by the Vi with financial support from the government of Finland last October has already produced concrete results in teaching, research and policy advice to governments in participating countries.
 
“At the Vi, we believe that the measure of success of our professional development workshops lies in the extent to which our graduates apply the new knowledge in their work,” said Vi Chief, Vlasta Macku.

Thanks to the support from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Government of Finland, the Virtual Institute will offer scholarships to all selected participants of the Vi online course on trade and poverty analysis, to be held September 10 to November 30. 
 
Developed for researchers and university lecturers from developing and transition countries, the course aims to provide participants with the empirical tools needed to assess the impact of trade and trade-related policies on poverty and income distribution.
 
 
Vi hosts eighth study tour for West Indies member university

For the eighth year in a row, the Virtual Institute provided Master’s students from core member, the University of the West Indies (UWI), with the opportunity to learn from international experts during a two-week Vi study tour held in Geneva May 14-25.
 
Representing seven Caribbean countries*, the 14 students, accompanied by Vi member coordinator, Neil Paul, participated in a training programme designed to complement the Master’s programme in International Trade Policy offered by UWI’s Shridath Ramphal Centre in Barbados.

Colombian congress looks to integration as force for development

altIn search of solutions to allow Colombia to take full advantage of the increasing globalization of international markets, Universidad de la Sabana, a Vi affiliate university member, chose “Multi-level integration: Catalyst for development” as the topic of its fourth biannual congress on international business management, held in Bogota April 26-27.

Expert network on international economic relations successfully takes off

altIn January 2012, the Vi, the University of Barcelona and the CEDDET Foundation, with financial support from the Government of Spain, launched the International Economic Relations Network (IERN).

The online professional network aims to provide further education and networking opportunities for graduates of the Vi/CEDDET online courses on legal instruments of international economic relations and regional cooperation, as well as to students of the University of Barcelona's (UB) Master in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO).
