About the university: Founded in 1999 by the Universities of Bern, Fribourg and Neuchâtel in Switzerland, the World Trade Institute (WTI) is dedicated to capacity building and raising global awareness of international economic law and economics. Based in Berne, WTI provides graduate studies and a forum for interdisciplinary research and teaching in these fields. The Master of International Law and Economics (MILE) is the flagship programme of the WTI, established in 1999. The programme was built upon the success of the Uruguay Round and the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995. In 2005 WTI became the leading research centre for the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Trade Regulation. Current research network activities include a cooperation scheme with universities in five developing countries, regular informal brown bag lectures, the annual World Trade Forum conference and hosting of the 2014 SIEL conference. Faculty members for the MILE and two Summer Academies (Berne and Hong Kong) include nearly 60 lecturers drawn from international organisations, leading law practices, the corporate sector and academia. Some 50 researchers and administrative staff work within the institute.

Courses offered: The MILE programme provides weekly modules focused on trade and development.

Areas of expertise: As part of the Swiss-funded research network, NCCR Trade Regulation, an exhaustive array of research activities take place, structured into the following modules: Trade Governance; Preferential Trade and Investment; Innovation and Creativity in International Trade; Trade, Development and Migration; Trade and Climate Change; Impact Assessment.
