altAzerbaijan State Economic University (ASEU) has become the first Virtual Institute member of the new year, and the 33rd country represented in our global network. ASEU also joins Belarus, Russia and Ukraine as the fourth transition-country core member.

The university's application came under the auspices of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Geneva, who took an interest in the Vi while organizing the July 2010 UNCTAD Regional Course on Key Issues on the Economic Agenda held in Baku.

ASEU is Azerbaijan's leading university in the area of economics education and research, offering undergraduate, graduate and PhD programmes on a variety of economic topics to its more than 15,000 students.

More than 60 faculty members are involved in teaching "trade and development" issues; about one-quarter of them are engaged in the research of global economic issues and their implications for the country and its integration into the world economy.

ASEU's Vi member coordinator, Shahin Bayramov teaches courses on international economics, trade policy and world economy, in addition to serving as assistant to the university's Rector. His research interests revolve around the European Union and its relations with Azerbaijan, as well as his country's economic cooperation with the United States. Nazim Hajiyev, Head of the Division for Social-economic Problems of Regions, will also be involved in the cooperation with the Virtual Institute.

For more information, take a look at the university profile on the Vi website. You may also read a related article in Geneva's Diva International magazine.
