UNCTAD’s new initiative to further improve the data available on on Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) and Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) was the focus of the short course for Geneva-based Diplomats held October 30, 2009.

The introduction in the video below was delivered by Khalil Rahman, Chief of the Trade Analysis Branch, who briefly described UNCTAD’s activities regarding NTBs data and the main issues on collecting and sharing the information.

The short-course's two sessions were led by Samuel Munyaneza, Economic Affairs Officer in the Trade Information Section of UNCTAD's Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities.

In the first part of his presentation, Munyaneza covers terminology, data collection and sources, collaboration with other organizations, and details of UNCTAD’s Trade Analysis and Information System (TRAINS) and World Bank Integrated Trade Solution (WITS) databases.

In the second session, Munyaneza explains what UNCTAD is doing to improve the collected information, describes the behind-the-scenes of NTMs' new classification, and reveals UNCTAD’s plans to share the database with researchers and policymakers.
