In this Vi multimedia teaching resource, Stephania Bonilla, of UNCTAD's Division on Investment and Enterprise, presents findings from the 2016 World Investment Report (WIR) - "Investor Nationality: Policy Challenges." The presentation was filmed during a videoconference with Vi Colombian member universities.
Bonilla begins with a look at current trends and recent developments in foreign direct investment. She also examines challenges and shortcomings in developing countries, and the relationship between foreign direct investment and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The presentation concludes with a discussion of this year's WIR special topic: investor nationality, which calls into question the relevance of this requirement – still imposed by a majority of countries – given the increasing fragmentation of production process and internationalization of enterprises.
