In a video conference held January 15, UNCTAD presented its World Investment Report 2007 to Egyptian Vi member, Cairo University. The videoconference was organized by the Virtual Institute in cooperation with UNCTAD's Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development.

H.E. Ambassador Nihad Abdel Latif, of Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed the hope that in the future there would be more opportunities for a dialogue between UNCTAD and Eyptian academics.

"This (dialogue) allows for a direct exchange that is of central importance to the process of economic development," added H.E. Sameh Shoukry, Ambassador, Permanent Mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who joined Ambassador Latif in welcoming the cooperation between the Virtual Institute and Cairo University.

Dr. Keith Nurse, the recently appointed director of the Sridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy and Services at Vi's Caribbean university member, University of the West Indies, met with the Vi team January 16, to discuss future activities and areas of cooperation with the network.

Dr. Nurse was in Geneva as panellist in the session on Promoting Trade Gains from Creative Goods and Services at UNCTAD's Secretary-General High-level Panel on the Creative Economy and Industries for Development.

Three junior lecturers from the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, completed their six-week fellowships at UNCTAD on 14 December 2007.

Under the guidance of mentors from UNCTAD's Division on International Trade in Goods, Services and Commodities, they worked on research assignments of specific relevance for their country - on the liberalization of financial services under GATS, regional integration, and fiscal regime for the mining sector.

As part of UNCTAD's research and technical cooperation activities on management of external debt of developing countries, the UNCTAD Virtual Institute and the Division on Globalization and Development Strategies have launched a new e-learning module on debt sustainability analysis (DSA).

The training module is targeted at policy makers, debt analysts, practitioners, as well as academics, and is prepared as part of a secretariat technical assistance project on Capacity Building for Debt Sustainability in Developing Countries.

In the fastest application procedure in the history of the network, the University of Nairobi's School of Economics today became member number 23 of the Virtual Institute.

"We met with a very dynamic lecturer from the University of Nairobi at the trade and poverty workshop in Tanzania last month," said Vi's Chief Vlasta Macku. "Tabitha immediately began negotiations to admit her university into the network, and she got it all done in less than two weeks!"

UNCTAD's New Technologies, Training and Capacity Building Branch (NTTCB) - the Virtual Institute's home within UNCTAD - organized the fifth meeting of the "UNCTAD Advisory Group on the Strengthening of Training Capacities and Human Resources Development" on 26 November in Geneva.

In a video conference held December 10, UNCTAD presented its World Investment Report 2007 to two Russian Vi member universities actively engaged in trade and investment training and research - the State University Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow, and St. Petersburg State University.

In addition to masters students and staff from the two universities, the videoconference gathered a varied audience that included government representatives (Ministry of Economic Development and Trade in Moscow, and Geneva's Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation), the press (two daily newspapers in Moscow and a TV channel in St. Petersburg) and the Director of the British Council office in St. Petersburg, whose facilities hosted the event.

The videoconference was moderated by Tatiana Isachenko, Vi coordinator at HSE, Olga Trofimenko from St. Petersburg State University, and Vlasta Macku, Chief of the Virtual Institute.

EAFIT University's Vi member coordinator, Sascha Furst, lent his expertise on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to UNCTAD and the University of Fribourg during his stay in Geneva October 17-19.

Furst presented findings of a study on domestic SMEs from the 3D-animation industry in the television international production chain in Colombia.

Adérito Notico, of Vi core member Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, conducted research on agricultural exports during his stay at UNCTAD from October 7 to November 16.

Under the guidance of Aimable Uwizeye-Mapendano, from the Division on International Trade in Goods and Services and Commodities, Notico prepared an outline for a study on "Options for Maximization of Mozambican Agricultural Exports Revenues."

Makerere University Business School (MUBS), a business and management education and training institution in Kampala, today became the 22nd core university member of the Vi network.
