About the university: The Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) is a federal public foundation linked to the Strategic Affairs Secretariat of the Presidency. It provides technical and institutional support to government for the formulation and reformulation of public policies and development programs in Brazil. Ipea’s work is made available to society through numerous regular publications and seminars.

Ipea celebrated its 45th Anniversary in September 2009. Its mission is "to produce, coordinate and disseminate knowledge to improve public policy and to contribute to Brazilian development planning."

Areas of expertise: IPEA has traditionally been a prominent think tank whose research covers the entire range of trade and development topics, and which has close ties to the Presidency of the Republic. The Institute publishes its research extensively, including through its own publications, which include a series of Discussion Papers, a Review of International Economy and Policy, and the "World Times" and "Development Challenges" magazines. IPEA's objective is to produce and disseminate knowledge to improve public policies and to contribute to Brazilian economic planning. 

Courses offered:
IPEA offers a Master\'s Programme in Development and Public Policies, which is made up of four units:

  • Development: theory and history, emcompassing theoretical and historical analysis on development issues (two courses of 60 hours each);

  • Public policies and governance: concepts and elements related to various policy areas, ethics, economics of the public sector, etc;

  • Research methodology: quantitative and qualitative methods;

  • Advanced seminars and special conferences with focus on public policy and development subjects.
