Lately ranked as the world's top small think tank  (according to the 20111 Global Go-To Think Tanks Index), The North-South Institute is also the oldest independent policy research institution in Canada. Founded in 1976 as an independent, non-governmental and non-partisan research institute, it specializes in International Development.  With the aim of creating a more prosperous and stable global community, NSI centres its studies around governance, global flows (trade, investment, aid and migration), fragile states and natural resources.

The Centre has intensified its focus on lower income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, and aspires to increase its collaboration with research partners from emerging economies to accelerate South-South transfers of knowledge and policy solutions.
