L'Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi, established in 1902 in Milan, has become the 24th Virtual Institute Core University Member, and the third member from a developed country (in addition to Canada and France) to join the Vi network.
The admission of Bocconi follows a request by the Vi membership to expand the participation of developed-country universities in the network. Its recommendation and selection is the outcome of Vi's cooperation with UNCTAD's Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development.
The Vi will work with Bocconi's PhD School, which offers an interdisciplinary degree in International Law and Economics covering international economic, legal and taxation subjects, as well as the functioning of economic international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
By becoming a member, the university aims to increase the exchange of ideas and experience between their PhD students and those of the network. In exchange, the university proposes to host research fellowships, share teaching material and research outcomes, as well as provide speakers and opportunities for professional development and short-term visiting professorships.
