Universitat de Barcelona logoSpain's Universitat de Barcelona (UB) has joined the Virtual Institute network, becoming the 25th core university member, and joining Canada, France and Italy as the fourth member institution from a developed country.

UB has already contributed to the network this year by offering scholarships to candidates from Vi member universities for its Masters in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO).

Vi's counterpart, the International Chair WTO/Regional Integration of the Faculty of Law, was created in 2006 to study international business relations and their future trends, regional economic integration and its regulatory framework. The Chair also manages the IELPO programme and is developing, in collaboration with the WTO, “Barometer” to study the state and perspectives of international trade relations. Colleagues from the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics will also be involved in the cooperation with the Vi.

As part of the Vi partnership, UB has offered to share its expertise in the regulatory framework of globalization, international agreements and institutions associated with trade, investment and related areas. The university plans to contribute to the development of teaching materials, participate in research projects, co-organize events, and promote the participation of Vi members in its activities and programmes, including scholarships for the IELPO programme.

UB's Vi coordinator is Ramon Torrent, coordinator of the WTO Chair and the Observatory EU-Latin America. Ramon has a PhD in Law and is involved and teaches political economy and international economic law. He is also the director of the IELPO programme. His research work focuses on globalization, regional integration, legal aspects of foreign direct investment and trade in services.
