New director from the University of the West Indies visits UNCTADDr. Keith Nurse, the recently appointed director of the Sridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade Law, Policy and Services at Vi's Caribbean university member, University of the West Indies, met with the Vi team January 16, to discuss future activities and areas of cooperation with the network.

Dr. Nurse was in Geneva as panellist in the session on Promoting Trade Gains from Creative Goods and Services at UNCTAD's Secretary-General High-level Panel on the Creative Economy and Industries for Development.

Since his appointment, he has worked on consolidating and further developing a structured range of services for the Centre. Already scheduled for February and March are symposia and workshops on the Caribbean perspective of the negotiations of trade and investment agreements, competition policy and law, and services exports under the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreements.

Following the success of the M.Sc. in International Trade Policy managed by the Centre, the University now plans to launch a new Masters in Innovation and Technology Governance. "We find it very important to link trade to industrial development", explains Nurse about the rationale behind the new programme - thus addressing the question of the supply-side capacity of the Caribbean economies.

The fourth Vi study tour - a training programme at international organizations in Geneva - for students of the M.Sc. in International Trade Policy is scheduled for May 2008. Among the additional topics that may be covered this year are trade and health, migration, and creative industries.

"The objective is to make the study tour complementary to what the academic part of the Masters is offering", Nurse said.

Another study tour is already planned for the year 2009.
