And Chile makes 20The Vi is today 20 strong, after admission of the Institute of International Studies (IEI) of the University of Chile into the group.

IEI's membership is due in part to networking efforts between the Vi central team and Vi member university Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO) of Argentina.

The Institute's name came up last year as the Vi sought FLACSO's assistance in locating qualified academicians to participate in UNCTAD's Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on Trade Related Capacity Building, held in Geneva in November (see web article).

Founded in 1966 to provide research and analysis of Latin America's issues, the IEI today has expanded from a regional focus to become an educational and research center in the field of international relations - one of the first in Latin America to dedicate itself specifically to international studies.

The Institute counts with a multidisciplinary faculty of nearly 30 professors that combine high academic qualifications with professional experience in the public and private sector to give students the practical and theoretical knowledge necessary to participate in the international arena.

IEI offers several diplomas and two postgraduate programmes in the field of international studies: Magister in International Studies, and Master of Laws in International Law, Investments, Trade and Arbitration. In addition, the Institute is the hub for the World Trade Organization's Regional Trade Policy Course for Latin America .

An international student body with members from Latin America, Europe and Asia, has facilitated IEI's associations with organizations like the World Trade Organization, INTAL/IDB and ALADI. In addition, the Institute has established relationships with the Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina Brazil), Universidad de Buenos Aires, University of Oslo, and the Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (Uruguay).

IEI's member coordinator, Professor Francisco J. Prieto, directs the Centre for Trade Policy Studies and the WTO Regional Trade Policy Course for Latin America. He can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
