South Africa newest VI university member The Vi is pleased to welcome the Investment and Trade Policy Centre (ITPC) of the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria as its 17th core member.

Established in 2002, its core services are conducting research and providing training in a range of trade and trade-related areas. The centre focuses primarily on the development of competencies and capacity in the areas of investment and trade policy that would allow developing countries to efficiently negotiate their countries' position in the global trade and investment arena.

Constantly striving to develop and extend its affiliations and collaborations with other institutions, the Centre is involved in capacity building partnerships with institutions such as the World Trade Organization, the World Bank and the New Partnership for Africa 's Development (NEPAD). It has also developed affiliations and collaborations with major universities and institutions in South Africa and southern Africa.

The Centre hopes to benefit from technical assistance, access to data and sabbatical opportunities at UNCTAD, and to exchange information and staff with other Vi members. It is also willing to contribute to the network by cooperating on curricular development, exchanging information and data, and providing access to exchange programmes, training and research opportunities to institutions from other participating countries.

Professor André C. Jordaan, Director of the ITPC, will serve as member coordinator. Currently responsible for masters and PhD courses in International Trade, his research  interests include development strategies, foreign direct investment, economics of international trade and international trade relations.
