Carbon Concerns: How Standards And Labelling Initiatives Must Not Limit Agricultural Trade From Developing CountriesPolicy brief by MacGregor, James/ ICTSD, 2010, 40 pagesCategories: Trade and EnvironmentThe carbon embedded in internationally traded food and agricultural goods – its measurement, as well as different ways of communicating its climate impact – is a rapidly emerging factor in agricultural production, processing and trade. The emerging, mainly non-statutory, private-sector driven carbon labelling schemes raise a number of issues. This paper examines the current status of carbon labelling initiatives in the food industry. It looks at how embedded carbon is likely to be marketed and how this phenomenon may impact agricultural trade from developing countries.
