During the preparation of this year's Trade and Development Report (TDR), UNCTAD's Division on Globalization and Development Strategies invited World Bank's research department lead economist, Branko Milanovic, to share the findings of his research on global inequality, the latest TDR's principal theme.
In this Vi multimedia teaching resource, Milanovic explains the methods and data involved in measuring global inequality and traces its progression in the last two centuries. Although the data points to decreasing inequality between countries since globalization, the income gap within countries is growing larger.
"Today, the place where you are born (..) .determines to a large extent your flow of income," Milanovic said. "We are becoming a world of migrants. Migration is becoming a big political issue."
