Building knowledge for trade and development

Video and multimedia

This two-part multimedia resource, based on a session delivered by WTO's Roberta Piermartini at the Vi/WTO/ITC workshop on tools and methods for trade and trade policy analysis held October 10-14, 2011 in Geneva, introduces the gravity model of trade in international economics.

Part one of this resource covers the theory behind this bilateral trade flows modeling tool, and builds the gravity equation taking into account  multilateral resistance terms, country fixed effects and the incidence of zero trade.

Part two applies the gravity model to an application gauging whether joining the WTO increases trade.

We are grateful to the Government of Finland for funding both the workshop and this multimedia resource, targeted to  government officials and researchers from developing countries.
