This multimedia teaching resource, recorded during videoconferences with Vi member universities in Belarus, Colombia and Morocco, features foreign direct investment (FDI) experts, Astrit Sulstarova, Nicole Moussa, Noelia Garcia-Nebra and Axèle Giroud, of UNCTAD's Division on Investment and Enterprise.
Based on UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2013, the presentations begin with an overview of global and regional investment trends, revealing a shift of investment flows to developing countries, despite a global decline attributed to continued macroeconomic fragility and investor uncertainty.
“In 2012, global FDI declined by 18 percent,” Sulstarova reported. And for the first time ever, with "(e)leven developing and transition economies (...) among the top 20 recipients of FDI,” developing countries suprpassed developed economies as FDI recipients.
The second part of the presentations is dedicated to the special theme of the report, global value chains, an economic activity whose value added trade contributes about 30 percent to the GDP of developing countries.
